Top Songs of 2007
Dec 17th, 2007 by alan
I freaking love end-of-year countdown lists. Like; you know on channel four where they have like, the 100 most entertaining comedy moments, or the 100 most tabloid newsworthy shenanigans, or whatever; I would so watch them… were they not hosted by the most irritating man in the history of irritations: Jimmy Carr.
So of course, following my top 10 records of 2007, I thought I might do a song list as well. Sure why not. Everyone else is. Also, can I just say; I want to change about three of my top 10 records to something else; I’ve been listening to some great stuff over the last couple of days, that I just never got the chance to listen to before now.
I’m rambling. So; here’s some top songs from 2007. Please note; they are not listed by number. This isn’t a top 10; this is just a “I’ve really loved all of these songs”. You will also find no mention of tracks from albums that appeared in my top 10 records. This is a separate list; exclusive of the earlier one. If I was to do a top 10 favourite tracks of 2007, don’t you think my beloved Feist would occupy almost all 10
?? Well, don’t you?
Ok. FINALLY. Here goes:
California - A.B. O’Neill
Infectious as I don’t know what. Pure pop bliss. Enjoy while sitting outside on a blistering hot day with a mojito in your hand.
Imitosis - Andrew Bird
I really don’t know why, but this makes my feel all happy and fuzzy inside. I think I just love the word Imitosis! The song is cool too.
Neon Bible - Arcade Fire
It’s the chorus. It gets me every time. Or maybe it’s the whole basey thing. Personally I think Arcade Fire were spoken about far too much in 2007, but I like this track, so I’m prepared to add to the fodder.
Viens Avec Moi - Devotchka
Conor has written loads about these folks for a while now, and I was in HMV one day and out of the corner of my eye the album stuck out at me like a sore thumb. “ooh, isn’t that the album Conor’s always talking about?” Without having heard a musical note from these guys before, I bought the entire album. Viens Avec Moi makes me just want to grab someone and spin around and around SO fast until you’re so dizzy you fall over.
Heart’s A Mess - Gotye
I think this is probably technically classed as a 2006 track, but this face ain’t even bovvered, and I’ll put it in my 2007 list if I want to! Introduced to me via Enda on his blog, I love this song.
White Tooth Man - Iron and Wine
This guy’s voice is a bit of a wonder to me. Every picture I’ve seen he looks like a 70 year old homeless man. He sings like a gentle thirty something… that’s a good thing, I think. I just like this song. It makes me want to shake, clap and stomp.
Talk of the Town - Kate Walsh
I’m a sucker for a sweet voiced songstress. (Link to a live version of the song)
Cheer Me Up Thank You - New Buffalo
I’ve haven’t yet; but I know one of these days I’m just going to burst into tears when listening to this song. Delicacy beyond words.
This Is Not a Test - Oppenheimer
When Pop is bad; it’s very, very bad. When it’s good. Good god, it’s good.
Samson - Regina Spektor
“You are my sweetest downfall. I loved you first”.
Subtlety is key, me thinks.
Let Me Know - Róisín Murphy
She’s as batty as two brooms rubbed together… but my goodness can she make some great tunes.
Umbrella - Scott Simons
Yes, it is the ella, ella, ella, eh song. But he gets brownie points for not being Rihanna.
Buttons - Sia
I hate the video SO MUCH, that I can’t watch it… but I love Sia, and her voice. Which I think is on top form here.
If You Want Me - Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova
You just couldn’t not have this on any best of list. Pure bliss for just over three minutes. (Link to a Live Version)
“Are you really here or am I dreaming
I can’t tell dreams from truth
for it’s been so long since I have seen you
I can hardly remember your face anymore ” Aw.
Moodsets - Wallis Bird
Weaving between calm and chaotic, I SCREAM this in my car on my way home, without fail. Makes me want to be able to play music, so that I can make fun sounds like this. (Link goes to another live version)
Sister Rosetta Goes Before us - Robert Plant & Alison Krauss
Best of a great bunch from that album.
Right. I’m exhausted.

Yay another list! You must be feeling better
Lots of stuff on here I haven’t heard too, great for getting into in the depths of January…
Eugh. If only Catherine. If only. My throat feels like it’s wrapped in nails. I think it might be sick day tomorrow. Keeping my brain occupied was the only thing that kept me from thinking about illness.
But don’t listen to me. I’m just feeling sorry for myself.
Don’t forget that “Guilty Pleasures” list. I’m waiting.
Ah! Another list to be favourited until I’ve finished mine. How come you’re all so bloody efficient?
Fabulous- utterly fabulous. Love Hearts a Mess too! I’m off to discover all teh ones I don’t know - yipeeeeeee
Red; you’re just too thorough! Just get listing baby, yeah!
I love the word fabulous when directed at me or my work Conor.
Fab list! Between yourself and Conor, it looks like I’ll be giving some attention to DeVotcKa and Andrew Bird.
Thanks for the shout re Gotye; such a great track!
It is, Enda. Another of my car favourites when I’m driving home. Actually, I find Andrew Bird a little similar to Gotye… well, from that one track that I’ve heard by Gotye… I keep meaning to track down more of his music… Must get on that.
love so many songs on this list, I’m going to check out the few I don’t know.
I love year in lists too, but inevitably i start listening to all the new music I find in the tail end of 2007, which becomes my favorite music of 2008.
